Description
Oldboy begins with Oh Dae-su, an ordinary man who is abducted off the street one night and held captive in a small, sealed room for fifteen years without explanation. During his imprisonment, he learns via television that his wife has been murdered and he has been framed for the crime, compounding his confusion and despair. One day, just as suddenly as he was taken, Dae-su is released onto a rooftop with new clothes, money, and a cellphone, still with no understanding of who imprisoned him or why. Determined to uncover the truth and exact revenge, he begins to follow a trail of cryptic clues through a twisted underworld, eventually crossing paths with Mi-do, a compassionate young sushi chef who becomes emotionally entangled in his quest. As Dae-su edges closer to his captor, he unearths dark secrets buried in the past, revealing a meticulously orchestrated vendetta driven by pain and memory. With each revelation, the lines between hunter and prey blur, and Dae-su is forced to confront not only the identity of his enemy but also the horrifying reason behind his ordeal. Park Chan-wook’s masterful direction, along with powerful performances and a haunting visual style, create a brutal yet poetic tale of vengeance, guilt, and the irreversible consequences of human actions. Disturbing, stylish, and emotionally devastating, Oldboy is a landmark of modern world cinema that lingers long after its shocking climax.
