Parasite

A poor family schemes their way into working for a wealthy household, but their plan spins out of control when class tensions erupt into chaos.

Description

Parasite follows the Kim family, who live in a squalid basement apartment and struggle to make ends meet through odd jobs and scams. When the son, Ki-woo, is offered a chance to tutor the daughter of the affluent Park family, he forges credentials and seizes the opportunity. Impressed by his performance, the Parks unwittingly open the door to the rest of the Kims, who slowly infiltrate the household by posing as unrelated professionals—a driver, an art therapist, and a housekeeper—by cunningly displacing the existing staff. As the two families grow increasingly entwined, the Kims enjoy the luxuries of the Parks’ sleek, modern home, believing they’ve found a way to climb the social ladder without consequence. But their carefully constructed facade begins to crack when an unexpected visitor threatens to expose their deception, unleashing a spiral of events that peel back the layers of privilege, desperation, and denial. Tensions simmer just beneath the surface, until an eruption of violence and revelation shatters the illusion of harmony between the classes. Bong Joon-ho’s masterful direction balances biting social commentary with suspense and irony, weaving together humour and horror in a way that is both universally resonant and deeply specific. Parasite is a gripping, genre-defying exploration of inequality, ambition, and the invisible lines that separate those who have from those who serve.
