Description
Gattaca is set in a future society driven by eugenics, where people’s lives are determined at birth by their genetic makeup and natural conception is viewed as inferior. Vincent Freeman is one such individual, born without genetic enhancements and classified as an “in-valid,” limiting him to menial work despite his intelligence and ambition. Dreaming of becoming an astronaut and travelling to space, Vincent realises that the only way to achieve his goal is to subvert the system. He enters into a secret arrangement with Jerome Morrow, a genetically superior man whose promising career was cut short by an accident that left him paralysed. Assuming Jerome’s identity, Vincent meticulously adopts his DNA, samples, and physical attributes to pass the exhaustive daily screenings at Gattaca, the elite space agency. As Vincent trains for a mission to Saturn’s moon Titan, he must evade suspicion from authorities, including a persistent investigator looking into a mysterious murder at Gattaca’s headquarters. Meanwhile, Vincent develops a close relationship with Irene, a fellow employee who harbours her own insecurities despite her genetic credentials. As tensions rise and the investigation narrows, Vincent’s determination is tested, and he must rely on his willpower, discipline, and Jerome’s reluctant support to see his dream through. The film explores themes of identity, freedom, and what it truly means to be human, challenging the notion that potential is solely written in one’s genes. With its sleek aesthetic and philosophical depth, Gattaca presents a chillingly plausible vision of the future, highlighting the moral and societal costs of reducing human worth to a sequence of genetic code.
