Description
In the year 2054, Earth is overpopulated and facing environmental collapse. To alleviate these pressures, a space mission is launched to colonize the ice planet Niflheim. Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) volunteers for the mission, accepting the role of an “Expendable”—a disposable worker who undergoes cloning after each death, retaining memories of his previous lives. Over four years, Mickey dies and is resurrected sixteen times, each death more harrowing than the last. During a mission on Niflheim, Mickey 17 is presumed dead after an encounter with native creatures. However, he survives and returns to the colony, only to discover that a new clone, Mickey 18, has been created. The existence of two clones violates the colony’s strict policies, and both must conceal their identities to avoid termination. As the two Mickeys navigate their shared existence, they uncover deeper conspiracies involving the colony’s leadership and the ethical implications of cloning. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Mickey 17 blends dark humor with existential themes, exploring the value of life, identity, and the consequences of technological advancements. The film features a strong supporting cast, including Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Critics have praised Pattinson’s performance and the film’s unique narrative, though some have noted its complex structure and thematic depth.
