Moonlight

A young Black man grapples with his identity and sexuality while growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami.

Description

Moonlight follows the life of Chiron, a quiet and sensitive boy navigating the harsh realities of his environment while coming to terms with his sexuality. The story is told in three distinct chapters, each portraying a pivotal stage of Chiron’s life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. In his early years, Chiron, nicknamed “Little,” is bullied at school and neglected at home, but he finds an unlikely mentor in Juan, a local drug dealer who becomes a compassionate father figure. Juan and his girlfriend Teresa provide Chiron with a safe space and a rare sense of stability, helping him to understand the world and himself. As a teenager, Chiron faces intensifying pressure from his peers and deepening struggles with his mother, who is increasingly consumed by addiction. A moment of intimacy with a friend both confuses and awakens something within him, setting in motion a series of events that force him to stand up for himself in ways he never has before. Years later, as an adult who now goes by “Black,” Chiron has transformed physically and emotionally, adopting a hardened persona to cope with the pain of his past. Yet beneath the surface, he remains haunted by questions of identity, longing, and vulnerability. When he reconnects with someone from his past, Chiron is confronted with a rare chance at emotional truth and connection, challenging the barriers he’s built around himself. Tender, intimate, and quietly devastating, Moonlight is a lyrical portrait of a life shaped by silence, resilience, and the enduring search for love.
