Description
Mulholland Drive opens with a car crash on a winding Los Angeles road that leaves a glamorous woman with no memory of who she is. Staggering into the city, she takes refuge in a stranger’s apartment, where she’s discovered by Betty, a bright and optimistic aspiring actress who has just arrived from a small town to pursue her dreams. Intrigued by the mystery, Betty decides to help the amnesiac woman, who chooses the name “Rita” after spotting a poster of Rita Hayworth. As the two begin to investigate Rita’s past, they uncover cryptic clues and encounter a series of bizarre characters that hint at something deeply sinister operating beneath the surface. Simultaneously, a parallel narrative follows a film director whose latest project is being sabotaged by enigmatic forces beyond his control, adding to the story’s sense of paranoia and confusion. As Betty and Rita grow closer, their bond intensifies into a romantic and emotional connection, even as their search for answers becomes increasingly disorienting. Gradually, the film fractures, unravelling its own structure and reassembling the characters and events in a way that challenges linear logic. What initially seemed like a straightforward mystery gives way to a haunting meditation on shattered identity, lost dreams, and the illusory nature of fame and self. With its hypnotic visuals, haunting score, and dreamlike storytelling, Mulholland Drive blurs the line between fantasy and reality, inviting multiple interpretations and lingering long after the final frame.
